Nova Scotia Housing Needs Assessment

Client: Province of Nova Scotia
Partners: Turner Drake, Upland

Housing in Nova Scotia is a complex issue, with many residents facing challenges related to affordability, availability, condition, and suitability. The need for stable, adequate housing is a top concern across the province.

Our Approach:

From June 2022 to January 2023, working with Turner Drake and Upland, we led a comprehensive provincial housing needs assessment, engaging a wide range of stakeholders. Our goal was to develop a tool that addressed the housing needs of residents across all 49 municipalities. We reached out to over 20,000 Nova Scotian households, holding 99 engagement sessions with residents, government agencies, post-secondary institutions, public institutions, non-profit organizations, and the private sector.

Engagement Methods:

Given the scale of the project, all engagement took place online. We used three primary methods: focus groups, workshops, and public surveys. This allowed us to gather both qualitative and quantitative data on housing affordability, availability, condition, safety, and other key factors. We engaged a wide range of voices, including post-secondary institutions, healthcare workers, municipalities, and non-profits.

Results:

The final report captures the themes and insights gathered during the engagement period. It reflects months of listening to the experiences of Nova Scotians and those on the front lines of the housing crisis.

Gratitude:

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who shared their time, stories, and expertise. Your openness was invaluable in helping us understand the pressing housing needs in the province.
